How to care for lips and their surroundings, not only in winter!

Healthy, full, hydrated lips are many women's dream. Lips are uniquely exposed to changing weather – in frost and wind they crack and hurt! Delicate skin around lips also shows mimic wrinkles. How to handle it? Dermatologist and aesthetic medicine doctor at Preibisz SkinDoctors, Lukasz Preibisz, knows the answer.

Lips – why do they dry out?

Our lips are covered with thin epithelium showing blood vessels, hence their red colour. Lips are basically devoid of sebaceous glands providing skin greasing, lacking moisture-loss protection. Dry, cracking lips usually result from harmful external factors, frosty dry air, cold wind etc. As a result lips turn dried and flaky, with cracks appearing. So proper protection matters, especially in winter.

- Long-term excessive dryness around lips may also signal disease – perioral dermatitis, allergies, psoriasis or eczema – to determine mouth dryness causes visit a dermatologist for skin lesion diagnosis and proper treatment – says doctor Preibisz.

What about mimic wrinkles around lips?

As doctor Lukasz Preibisz adds – Like other skin areas, lip red ageing is inevitable. Its structure weakens, renewal slows. Surely most of you heard of smoker lines, small vertical depressions in skin around lips. UV radiation further ages this area. Wrinkles also come from face movements, daily mimicry. Prevention, proper care are necessary, with aesthetic medicine and cosmetology treatments supporting effects. Interestingly, premature mouth-area wrinkles can also stem from dental issues like malocclusion or cavities.

How to care for lips and surroundings all year?

To reduce and preventively treat lip skin and surroundings, systematic care is essential. Lip epidermis should be exfoliated, regularly nourished, regenerated and protected from external factors. Contrary to popular belief, do not lick lips in frost and wind. Saliva can irritate, dry and sensitise lips. Never use others' lipsticks due to allergy or infection risks.

- Lip care rules resemble sensitive face skin care. Weekly gently peel lip epidermis and surrounding skin. This removes dead epidermis, smooths and improves microcirculation. Day and night use hydrating or anti-wrinkle creams as needed. More cosmetics now target eye and lip areas, the face's delicate points. Daily protection is key – hydrating lipsticks based on e.g. shea butter, jojoba oil or betulin, with UV filters, or SPF cream on this area work great.  Remember properly hydrated skin is 70% water, so lip care means not only cosmetics but healthy nutrition and proper body hydration – stresses doctor Preibisz.

Treatments improving lip skin and surroundings

Luckily lip problems can really be handled effectively. Besides prevention and symptom relief, consider aesthetic medicine's wide treatment range.

- One of our newest original combined therapies revitalising lips and surroundings is FRESH KISS. What is it? First CLEARLIFT – the first fractional, non-ablative Q-Switched laser. It laser-stimulates lips with no patient downtime. Then the doctor administers non-crosslinked hyaluronic acid – it does not enlarge lips but ensures long-term hydration. Lip and surrounding revitalisation and hydration in one treatment as an injectable-treatment alternative! – says doctor Preibisz.

For mouth wrinkles, filling treatments, tissue stimulators waking skin to work, Secret RF microneedle radiofrequency and many more are recommended!
