What is Portugal like in June?

Warm air preceding holiday heatwaves, rare rainfall and long sunny 20-plus-degree days – June tourists meet such Portuguese weather. Yet more than weather draws Europeans to the Iberian Peninsula just before season. Meeting true Portuguese culture is eased by tradition-rich national holidays. One falls exactly on 10 June.

Dia de Portugal, Portugal Day

As Portuguese sun rises earlier, setting after many long hours, a key holiday approaches, long celebrated by the Portuguese nation and Portuguese-speaking states. Every year 10 June marks Portugal and Portuguese Communities Day, coinciding with the death anniversary of national literary icon – Luís de Camões. Hence the full name: Dia de Portugal, de Camões e das Comunidades Portuguesas. Camões, baroque precursor called the "prince of poets", famed for "Os Lusíadas", the national epic singing Portugal's history and its people.

For Portuguese, Dia de Portugal is also a day off. This year citizens enjoy a long three-day June weekend – Friday to Sunday. A great chance for a short Iberian Peninsula trip, truly experiencing Portuguese culture, cuisine and traditions. Beautiful weather, summer-heralding sun and fresh Atlantic breeze, plus heritage and ocean delicacies, grace June travel to the Old Continent's far west.

How to reach Portugal?

The fastest transport is undoubtedly planes. From Poland fly to several airports, including:

  • Faro in the country's south,

  • Portugal's capital – Lisbon,

  • Porto in northern Portugal.

Remember Madeira airport too, the Atlantic island and Portuguese autonomous region. Flight tickets start around 300 PLN. Google says driving (non-stop) takes over 30 hours. Despite 3,000-plus kilometres, many Poles drive to Portugal. Regardless of transport, June in Portugal sounds a perfect plan for Iberian Peninsula beauty and taste, calmer than crowded scorching summer.
